What Counts as Nonferrous

Nonferrous metals are the ones a magnet will not stick to. They contain no iron, and they pay a great deal more per pound than steel and cast. On almost any job, the nonferrous is a small share of the weight but most of the value.

The magnet test is the whole trick. If it sticks, the metal is ferrous and pays the least. If it slides off, you are holding the metal worth separating out before it crosses the scale.

What is nonferrous metal?
Nonferrous metal is any metal that contains no iron, which means a magnet will not stick to it. Copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, lead, zinc, nickel, and titanium are all nonferrous. Because they carry no iron and are harder to produce from raw ore, they pay a great deal more per pound than steel and cast iron. You will see it written both ways, nonferrous and non-ferrous.
How do I tell ferrous from nonferrous scrap?
Use a magnet. If it sticks, the metal is ferrous: steel, cast iron, most structural material. If the magnet slides off, it is nonferrous: copper, aluminum, brass, stainless, lead. That one test tells you which pile pays more. On most jobs the nonferrous is a small share of the weight but the large share of the value, so it is worth separating before it crosses the scale.

Which nonferrous metal pays the most?
Copper, almost every time. Clean, bright copper wire and tubing sit at the top, followed by brass and stainless steel, then aluminum. The cleaner and better sorted the metal, the higher it grades. What is the difference between ferrous and nonferrous prices?
Ferrous metal contains iron and pays the least per pound, but it moves in heavy volume, so a load still adds up. Nonferrous metal has no iron and pays considerably more per pound, which is why sorting the copper and aluminum out of the steel is the single biggest thing you can do to raise a ticket. Both have value. They just grade and pay very differently.
Should I sort my nonferrous metals before bringing them in?
If you can, yes. Copper kept separate from brass, and clean aluminum kept out of the mixed pile, both grade higher than a jumbled load. That said, if you are not sure how to sort what you have, bring it in and ask. We will sort it with you on the scale and show you what grades where and what is worth separating.
