Why Scrap Prices Change

Scrap metal is a commodity, the same as corn or oil. What we can pay you depends on what mills, foundries, and overseas buyers are paying us. When construction and manufacturing are busy, mills need more scrap and prices go up. When things slow down, prices come back down.

Fuel costs, freight rates, tariffs, and the price of new metal all push on the number too. That is why no honest scrap yard posts a price list and leaves it up. The number that was right on Monday can be wrong by Thursday.

What we can promise: we pay the most competitive price in North Alabama, we weigh everything on a public scale you can watch, and you get cash before you leave.

What Usually Pays the Most

Roughly ordered from highest paying per pound to lowest. Condition matters as much as the metal itself.

Copper

The highest payer, pound for pound. Bright, clean copper wire and tubing grades highest. Insulated wire, painted pipe, and copper with fittings still attached pay less.

Brass

Red brass, yellow brass, and rod brass turnings all have solid value. Fittings, valves, and old plumbing hardware are usually brass. Keep it separate from copper.

Stainless Steel

Non-magnetic stainless pays better than magnetic. Sinks, restaurant equipment, and industrial fittings are common sources. A magnet is the fastest way to sort it.

Aluminum

Siding, sheet, wheels, and extrusion all have value. Aluminum cans pay per pound, not per can, so it takes a good many to add up. Radiators are a separate grade.

Steel & Iron

The lowest price per pound, but most people bring the most of it. Structural steel, cast iron, plate, and machinery add up fast by weight. We take it in almost any size.

Junk Cars & Batteries

We buy salvage cars, trucks, forklifts, and farm equipment. Car batteries have their own scrap value and we take those too. Title rules depend on the vehicle's age.

Clean Scrap vs Dirty Scrap

Clean means one metal, nothing else attached. Copper pipe with no solder or fittings. Aluminum with no steel bolts. Wire with the insulation off.

Dirty means there is something else mixed in. Insulated wire, painted metal, a radiator with plastic tanks, an aluminum casting with a steel core.

Dirty scrap still has value. It just pays less, because somebody has to do the separating and that somebody ends up being us. Twenty minutes of sorting in your driveway can put real money back in your pocket, especially on copper.

If you are not sure how to sort what you have, bring it in and ask. We will show you what grades where and what is worth the trouble to strip.

What to Bring With You

  • A valid photo ID. State or federal. A driver license is best. Alabama law requires it for every transaction.
  • The title, if the vehicle is 12 years old or newer. Anything older than that only needs the VIN so we can run it.
  • Your scrap, sorted if you can. Not required, but it almost always pays better.

We do not accept stolen material of any kind, and we keep records of every transaction as Alabama law requires.

Bringing a Large Load?

Give us a call before you haul it in. A quick phone call lets us make sure we have room, the right equipment ready, and a crew available to get you unloaded and paid without a long wait.

If it is too big to haul yourself, we can come get it. We run roll-off containers in 10, 20, 30, and 40 yard sizes, along with flatbeds, open-top trailers, and box vans. We also tow vehicles, forklifts, and machinery that cannot be driven in.

Scrap Price Questions We Get a Lot

What scrap metal pays the most?
Copper almost always pays the most per pound, especially clean, bright copper wire and tubing. Brass and stainless steel come next, then aluminum. Steel and iron pay the least per pound, but most people bring in far more of it by weight, so a load of steel can still add up. The condition matters as much as the metal. Clean, sorted material always pays better than a mixed pile.
How much is copper per pound in Alabama right now?
Copper prices move with the global market and can change from one day to the next, so any number posted on a website is out of date before you read it. Call your nearest Thornton yard and we will tell you exactly what we are paying for your grade of copper today.
Why are scrap metal prices low right now?
Scrap prices follow demand from mills, foundries, and overseas buyers. When construction and manufacturing slow down, mills buy less scrap and prices drop. Fuel costs, tariffs, and shipping rates all factor in too. Prices recover when demand picks back up, which is why it pays to call and ask before you decide whether to sell now or hold.
How do you decide what to pay for my scrap?
Two things: the current market price for that metal, and the condition of what you bring us. We weigh every load on a public scale that you can see, so there are no hidden numbers. Clean, sorted material grades higher than mixed or contaminated material. If you are not sure how to sort it, ask us and we will walk you through it.
What is the difference between clean and dirty scrap?
Clean scrap is one metal with nothing else attached. Clean copper pipe has no fittings, solder, or paint. Dirty scrap has other materials mixed in: insulation on wire, steel bolts in an aluminum casting, plastic on a radiator. Dirty scrap still has value, it just pays less because we have to do the separating. Taking twenty minutes to strip and sort can pay for itself.
Is it better to sell copper wire stripped or unstripped?
It depends on how thick the wire is. Heavy wire with a lot of copper inside is usually worth stripping, because bare bright copper pays a good bit more than insulated wire. Thin wire with a lot of insulation and very little copper often is not worth the labor. Bring it in either way and we will tell you honestly which makes sense for what you have.
What is the best time of year to sell scrap metal?
There is no reliable season. Scrap prices track industrial demand, not the calendar. What matters more is watching the market and calling before you haul. Some people hold copper waiting for a better price, and sometimes that works out and sometimes it does not. If you have material sitting around, call us and we will tell you what today looks like.
Do I need an appointment or can I just show up?
Just show up during business hours. All three of our yards are drive-through, so you pull in, we help you unload, your material goes across a public scale, and you get paid in cash before you leave. If you are bringing a very large load, a call ahead helps us have room and equipment ready for you.
What do I need to bring with me?
A valid state or federal photo ID, a driver license is best. If you are selling a vehicle that is 12 years old or newer, you need the title. Anything older than 12 years only requires the VIN so we can run it. We do not accept stolen material of any kind.
Is selling scrap metal taxable income?
Money you make selling scrap can be taxable, and how it is treated depends on whether you are cleaning out your own garage or running a business. We are not tax advisors, so talk to an accountant about your situation. We do keep records of transactions as required by Alabama law.
